@jordxn.simone: Replying to @danielle the babies don’t need to master phonics by 5, they need to know their left and right and how to not smack a neighbor during circle time #kindergarten #school #toddler #education #parents
my little sisters school doesnt have a long enough lunch for the kids to even finish their food, let alone have time to hang out with their friends, they also have a weird rule where once you sit, you cannot get back up until the end of lunch

They’re children not prisoners like what??? Children literally learn through play?

My high energy just turned 3-yr-old was asked to leave his daycare/prek because he “wouldn’t be able to keep up academically” in next year’s classroom, where they are going to have to do “book studies” and “class discussions”. The expectations even in prek are WILD.

I felt like I had made my daughter fall behind when she started school last year cause I didn't realize she needed to know EVERYTHINGGG😭 I was teaching her the basic things like letters, colors, numbers, shapes, yk I didn't know I needed to be feeding her sight words, cvc words, heart words 🙃💀First Grade has been even more of a whirlwind like wym y'all have report cards...you're 6?! Omg

and a kindie teacher, my advice to parents would be that kids learn life skills such as: potty training, putting shoes on, changing clothes, zipping coats, opening lunch box, packing a bag, putting toys in a bin, etc.
academics can wait until school unless you enjoy it!

adding to this , gifted kid's skills in school are HEAVILY neglected just because they can meet and exceed educational levels. im a senior in highschool and because i always "did well in class" , i was never properly taught how to study or do homework or manage my assignments. all throughout my middle and highschool years i have struggled with putting things off til the last minute , studying , and everything that MAKES a good student. theyre teaching us the information but not how to manage it. it just adds to students stress because we go from being the perfect students to suddenly getting failing grades , and its impossible to recover from that because its just way too late for most of us to learn and stick with those skills. idk if this makes sense with your point but i hope you see where my idea stemmed from yours

My daughter is in kindergarten, she’s burnt out. I got the summer school letter last week. She tested just under the standard in math. She’s FIVE. She deserves a break.

Please please please get your kids motor skills going! They need to know how to sit, stand still, raise their hands, play toss, physical motor skills are so so so critical for early literacy!!! Cross body activities!!!!! Prepared the brain and eyes for reading!

They are pushing academic standards so early. Like when i was in school (young millennials), we didn't even start actually reading for ourselves until 1st grade. They expected my kid to know all how letter sounds (not just the alphabet) and have beginning sounding-out skills going INTO kindergarten (he's in 2nd rn)

I am a early childhood special education professional. I taught special education preschool for 7 years up until 2020. Even back then, we were seeing the push for “readiness skills” for kindergarten. It was ridiculous what was expected for day 1 of kindergarten. We were focusing on the whole child in preschool, making sure they could even follow a one step direction with a visual cue. The jump to all the things you said for kindergarten made it so that there were no stepping stones in between!

I teach high school and grieve for my kiddos every day. 1 hrs homework PER CLASS every day. internships. office hours. sports practice. it's so much! when are they supposed to be able to just be kids?

I teach elementary in New England and when parents ask about kindergarten readiness I always say it’s snow stuff. If I kid can get most of their snow gear on they’ve used a ton of fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and stretched their frustration tolerance.

What’s more frustrating is that it’s not necessarily the content we expect that is stressful, it’s the way schools go about it. It’s all on a computer and at a desk. There’s no time for things like math or reading games anymore despite DECADES of developmental research showing that play is essential for learning. So it’s not necessarily that the academic expectations are too high, it’s that these poor babies are being starved of play.

We working on sight words, letter sounds, math with my daughter when she was a toddler. Now she has anxiety and can’t tie her shoes. There is enough time in the day to take on all of the things the are expected. I can’t imagine trying to do it now.

Also 99% of these skills can be taught through PLAY in addition to/instead of school-like instruction. Kids will learn better with gamification!

I just need a cigar on what all the terms mean that they're using to teach my kid. when you say Blending what does that mean for reading? what's the new way to say Carry The Two in math? I can't help if I'm using all the wrong language.

I had the academic skills to enter kindergarten early but my mom recognized that I wasn't socially or emotionally ready. My daughter on the other hand, it would have been a crime to keep her back because she was 100% ready to go.

Parents! Your child doesn’t need to read in kindergarten- they need to be able to sit and read a book with a parent .
