Growing up as GenX in the 70s, this was everybody’s grandparents. Grandma could make a meal out of her garden and leftover scraps. Grandpa could fix anything and saved nails from pallets in a coffee can.

I once asked my Greatest Generation grandmother if she had been happy in her life. She told me her generation didn’t have time to think about such things. As a GenXer, her answer made me feel small, and I realized my generation had it pretty good.

My grandma and grandpa said they didn't think about whether they were happy. Whether they were fulfilled. Not like we do today. They worked, They learned skills. How to fix, how to build, how to sew and mend.
