The 2007 anime proves you can have an adaptation without having a 1:1 to the games. People keep saying "oh but all you guys wants is a 1:1" no we don't. Just a good piece of DMC media, not this demon may weep trash

May I add a point to this. ahem. Johnny Yong Bosch, the voice actor of Nero was on a live panel at a con. I assume it was for devil may cry or something but. He stated that, the director PERSONALLY called him and asked him to voice Dante in the upcoming devil may cry anime (at the time of it still being in creation obviously) and Johnny replied with, “I already play a character in this franchise and I think it wouldn’t be right for me to replace (I can’t remember Dante’s voice actors name)” and the director specifically said to Johnny Quote, “well, I made this Dante so you could voice him. I made it for you” if that doesn’t scream, “directors wet dream” I don’t know what does.

"but is an alternate universe" then why adapt it at all? like why not make an original series? there's so many bizarre changes to fundamental character traits that it just doesn't add up. it'd be one thing to take the existing characters and remix the story and see how they'd react, it's another to completely write new characters and slap a dmc skin on them lol. Lady and Vergil probably get it the worst tbh

Idc if ppl like the show or not, but what the show lovers are not grasping about why we’re so angry is how hard it is for longtime fans to see a story and characters they’re super attached to get twisted and stepped on into something not just unrecognizable, but in some cases a mockery of the source material (IE. Vergils whole character in s2..) It’s not about accepting this alternate universe, it’s about being uncomfortable or offended by awful mischaracterizations and totally senseless plotlines that go against the original stories morals and values. It’s hypocritical as hell sometimes because everybody complains about ‘fanon mischaracterization’ which is exactly what this show is, but because it actually got animated I can’t criticize it? It’s a fanon alternate timeline, and their head canons and characterizations suck, sorry 😭😭

Series is a fun watch at best, I just wish adi wouldn’t have said he’s going to keep it true to the games. I don’t think people would mind if the anime was advertised as an alternate universe story that doesn’t strictly follow DMC games. Still would definitely be a lot of problems with the show regardless of that.

Adi getting jealous over dmc5 yet using bury the light, devil trigger etc... even getting Casey Edwards to produce music for the netflix show... unfunny reference to the plastic chair meme... it just doesn't add up 😭 his entire direction of the show is genuinely referenceslop to maintain relevance

AU explanation is so weird to me, because good AU re-explores the ideas and narrative of the original in a different context. Making changes to characters and lore only for the sake of change isn't a good AU by any means. Just a sloppy rethread of the third game.

Ig if you just separate the anime adaptation from the dmc games, then it becomes an pretty ok show, but it is definitely a horrible dmc adaptation and I will forever prefer the 2007 dmc anime over this.

Like I get it, he wants his own spin on DMC. But ya gotta at least somewhat respect the original stories, and have your spin on it make sense lore-wise, but definitely yours. So far it’s legit memes, ships, and ass-backwards writing
