As a high school Honors English-Language Arts teacher this past Fall semester I had the opportunity to teach my students about great leaders and innovators who championed Freedom & Equality. Their struggle led to progress for us all because "Freedom" is not free since these great people helped pay for the freedoms we have today. My students read multiple texts by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., from his "I Have a Dream" speech to excerpts from his last sermon, "I've Been to the Mountaintop". This prepared my students to experience Robert F. Kennedy's "A Eulogy for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr." speech and how César Chávez was connected to both great men. My students also learned about great women from Rosa Parks, who gave Dr. King his first campaign for freedom, to the brilliant women of Hidden Figures. During the "Freedom at All Costs" unit, I shared poems and songs about Freedom, including "A Change is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke, a timeless song that even inspired President Barack Obama's 2008 victory speech. The unit ended with students writing their own free verse poems to paint powerful pictures with words. Langston Hughes had a positive impact upon the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who grew up reading Langston's poetry and knew many of them by heart besides being his pen pal. Maya Angelou and Dr. King were good friends, too. Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou have been my favorite all-around writers since I was a child. My love for them helped inspire my passion & purpose for English and creative writing. I had a wonderful opportunity to meet Maya Angelou when I was 19 years old. I gave her a poem I wrote for her titled “MaYa ANGELou” (My Angel), and she held my hand in hers, closed her eyes and prayed for me. It was a surreal experience because she felt I was special enough to pray for. Langston Hughes' love for the sea inspired his first autobiography The Big Sea, which inspired my poem with the same title. I love the paintings of Ernie Barnes, recognized for his unique style of movement and energy, so as a teacher my prized artwork by him is “Each One, Teach One” about an African-American male teacher like me. My greatest inspiration as a teacher is Jesus Christ, so my post ends with my poem about the greatest teacher who ever lived, "Jesus Christ"! #freedom #martinlutherkingjr #langstonhughes #mayaangelou #blackteachersontiktok
