Yesterday at the Brazzaville concert, David spoke to the audience in Russian and joked about how difficult Russian is. From the stage came two classic questions from every RFL student: ❓ "Why do you always say НЕ with никогда?" ❓ "Why is it 1 год, 2 года, but 10 лет?" As an RFL teacher, I'll say: yes, Russian is truly difficult. But it's exactly these real-life moments that make a language authentic. 🔹 Double Negation / Двойное отрицание In Russian we say: «Я никогда не был» = I have never been. In Russian, one negation is not enough — the language likes to emphasize the meaning. English: I never go there. Russian: Я никогда не хожу туда. 👉 The Russian word "никогда" means never, but it doesn't work without "не". The same goes for "ничего" (nothing) and "никого" (no one). 🔹 Years & Numbers / Года и числа 1 год (year) 2–4 года (years) 5–20 лет (years) (and so on: 25 лет, 100 лет) Yes, it's confusing.
