to all the uneducated in the comments The British Army uses the pace stick (often referred to as a pay or pace-stick) primarily as a tool for measuring exact marching distances, ensuring soldiers maintain a full 30-inch stride. It also acts as an official symbol of authority and rank for instructors on the parade ground. Its historical evolution and usage include:Artillery Origins: The tool is believed to have been invented by the Royal Regiment of Artillery. It was originally used as a "gunner's stick" to measure the precise distances between artillery guns, ammunition carts, and horses in the field.Drill and Geometry: In the early 19th century, it was adopted by infantry sergeants to enforce uniformity. The device—two wooden legs joined by a brass hinge at the head—can be opened to form a fixed "V" shape that measures a standard 30-inch pace.Parade Precision: In 1928, Academy Sergeant Major Arthur Brand developed a formalized drill for the pace stick and standardized its use across the British Army to ensure perfect alignment and unity among troops.Symbol of Authority: Today, the pace stick remains a visible ceremonial indicator of a qualified Drill Instructor. It is typically carried by Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) and Warrant Officers.

This isn't even accurate... you'd have to rotate it a perfect 180 degrees each time to follow a perfectly straight line. Any deveation is going to change the measurement and each deveation compounds the inaccuracy
