The question was repeated several times, but neither president addressed it. According to a spokesperson from China’s foreign ministry, Xi stressed to Trump that the Taiwan question is “the most important issue” in China-U.S. relations. The spokesperson added that if the issue is handled properly, "the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability", but warned that if it isn't, it could lead to "clashes or even conflicts" between the two countries. "'Taiwan independence' and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water.
