Resellers spend more in charity shops than a ‘normal’ shopper, surely that’s a positive for the charity shop, they are getting asking price, no one is haggling. They get so many donations it’s better for them to move stock through regardless of who is buying it.

So, it's the same argument ticket scalpers make to justify what they do? People will pay them for the ticket and the venue still gets the ticket price.

i always look at it as I am supporting my local charity shops sometimes items resell sometimes they dont but either way Ive supported a charity shop along the way 🤷♀️i had no idea it was this controversial when i started! 😳

Yes you are right. The charity shop gets items free. So if they sell it for 50p, they have made 50p. If you buy a book for 50p and sell it for £1, you have made 50p. No more than the charity shop. Nothing wrong with that. 🥰

why don't you buy the book for 50p, make the profit and donate the profit back to charity?

every second hand seller since the dawn of time has to get their items from somewhere. before online selling, charity shops, car boots, jumble sales, etc, were places to source things to resell for vintage and antique fairs and shops. it isn't a new concept. antique shops prices have always been massively inflated, no one complains about them. it's ridiculous everyone is so opinionated on this subject. of course reselling is to support your life, house, bills and family, it's a job.

I live in Nuneaton and volunteer in the Cancer Research shop and buy loads as I get a discount. I also go to the Sue Ryder and Age Uk shops and they do reseller bundles. I support Mary Ann Evan’s as well as my husband used their daycare services and I go to a carers group there. Our money is the same as anyone’s.

the charity can always up there prices if they dont like resellers but then wouldn't sell most of there stock its usually cheap to sell quick

The purpose of charity shops is to raise funds by selling donated goods. They’re not there to clothe the poor. So whether someone buys to keep or to resell, the charity is still getting the money which is what they want.

Some charity shops sell some of their stuff online if they think they can get a good price for it but if they haven’t got the time/volunteers to do this they are just happy to sell their stuff at the price they’re asking for it. If someone wants to buy stuff and sell on where’s the problem? Most charity shops do know if the have a really expensive item and will sell it online

charity shops are more expensive now because they are trying to discouraging reselling. turns out they do care who buys it

Sally would read the book whereas you'd sell it to her for £2 instead of 50p

I used to volunteer at a charity shop and we’d get more donations than we could put out on the floor. The prices are set to sell a lot of items quickly. Not put the prices up so they stay on the rack or shelf for weeks or months

I’ve spent the last 30 years turning a profit from charity shops it’s just how things work , they get paid , I get paid , if they want more there’s nothing stopping them doing the research I do

as long as the charity shop gets the money, I have just started reselling and the charity shops are my favourite place

The only issue I have is when charity shops raise their prices to deter resellers as no one wins. If the charity shop has marked something for £2 your money is just as good as the next persons and if you resell for a £5 or whatever someone 50-100+ miles away could benefit as they might not be able to afford more and they’re not local to spot it themselves. Who these days hasn’t resold something, I’ve resold unwanted gifts, clothes and toys my kids have grown out off plus all sorts of other bits, I’ve also donated loads to charity. There’s no harm done and no need for backlash.

I buy from charity shops to resell, I get bargains, but so do my customers!eg. you better believe that £2 tweed dress went to someone who couldn't afford to buy full retail price, it's a win win !

as long as the charity shop gets the amount they want what does it matter it's a business like a 2nd hand car dealer buys a car and sells it on to make a profit

It’s absolutely ridiculous that this is the attitude towards Charity Shops. How is it any different to ANY shop. You buy at the price asked. That item is now YOUR item. I can now do with it whatever I want.

It’s a win win situation my friend, I wouldn’t take any notice of these comments! You buy from charity shop (win for them), you sell and make a profit (win for you) they buyer gets what they want (win for them) so what’s the issue? My friend is a Manager in a charity shop and they have to PAY a rag man per kg of clothing to be taken away when it doesn’t sell, so surely that’s not great for them? God only knows what the rag man does with the items!
