@softlauncheverything: It’s tricky to determine what confidence looks like in terms of behaviour but here are some things I’ve noticed. Following cognitive behaviour therapy, your behaviours affect your thoughts so these can help you become a more confident person #class #UK #confidence #lowerclass #stateschool

Queen! Deaf diva here - subtitles are most effective when they are NOT one at a time, and are larger, and located slightly up from where they are now. 💖

Yes I’ve noticed all of this! I really struggle with the neutral expression and not smiling 😅

This fascinates me! I would love to hear how these attributes/the confidence is actually instilled at home and in the private schooling system

Absolutely, have been working in a space with lots of people who have generational wealth. The note about taking up space and the relaxed nature definitely rings true. If anything it makes me feel more out of place. Just different worlds!

these are all things ive noticed and really trying hard to enact in career too. I feel like especially as a young woman there are also added expectations of me to be "pleasant" that I feel take away from the professional and ive been really leaning on my older female mentors about how to feel more confident. One fully asked me if a man the same age would make himself smaller and of course he wouldn't. Another told me she imagines putting a "professional" coat on before she goes in the room so she enters as the professional version of herself - which i really liked 💖

I’ve experienced all of this especially the belonging one!! So true. I had a lot of coaching to get over imposter syndrome and also my upbringing of girls should be seen and not heard. Still working on the people pleasing and smiling but it’s hard!!!

When I was a child….my very Slavic mother told me that only “idiots “ smile too much. So I was discouraged from doing that. All my life people have assumed that I was from an upper class, even though I was from a working class background. I articulate well and speak the “Queen’s English “ and appear confident. I aspired to be middle class and now am living an upper middle class life…..

People from wealthy background probably use their eyes more than their mouth in conversations. There is more eye contact, and that gives the warmth in the conversations.

The body language thing is perplexing to me. You are 100% correct, but think about how we are taught to “look” confident in professional situations: sit upright, hands in your lap, ramrod straight spine… basically, rigid and uncomfortable shows you are respectful, bit what it shows is you are n0t at home in a situation.

Can you talk about the language and use of words? I have lived in the UK for 13 yrs but only recently noticed that there is a clear distinction between how people who went to private school communicate and those who didn’t. It’s not necessarily about accent or the level of intelligence though
