This is a Korean exhumation ritual. In Korean tradition, one of the greatest fears is the wrath of spirits and ancestors. Before a grave can be opened, permission must be sought from the deceased, and prayers are offered to ask for forgiveness and mercy. The ritual begins with men who were born in the Year of the Pig being assigned to dig up the coffin. A pig carcass is used as a symbolic substitute for them, and cutting the pig is believed to absorb or divert any harmful consequences away from the people involved in the exhumation. Throughout the ceremony, shamans perform dances, chants, and music to entertain and appease the gods and spirits, putting them in a favorable mood so the exhumation can proceed safely and respectfully.
