If you rewatch the season carefully, you can see that Homelander had every chance to win this confrontation. I would completely accept the ending as it is if they had explained with a single line that V1 temporarily weakens the body while it's being absorbed. But Kripke didn't have the guts—or the budget—to give us the kind of ending where both victories simultaneously became defeats for both characters. It's funny to hear moralizing idiots say things like, "Butcher won because testosterone wins!" That's about as sensible as saying, "Going to the gym helps against gunfire!" We came to love Homelander because we got used to and grew attached to Anthony Starr and his incredible performance. The entire cast is fantastic, and during the first two seasons I was actually rooting for Butcher. But Homelander's pain and inner struggles were explored far more effectively. The bad ending and the humiliation of Homelander were deliberate, because the character had become too iconic. Everyone found within him that crazy, passive part of themselves that secretly wants to break free. We've accumulated so much anger and aggression that it evolved into a kind of Stockholm syndrome toward this villain. He's the perfect villain for our time, because in our time, there's no good left anymore...
