As Indiana Democratic delegates prepare to gather this Saturday, June 6, to select our party's nominee for Secretary of State, I encourage every delegate to understand what is at stake. What is happening right now in Louisiana should serve as a warning to the entire country. Civil rights advocates are sounding the alarm that efforts to redraw congressional maps in Louisiana will dilute and effectively erase Black representation in Congress. When Black voting strength is weakened through redistricting, communities lose political power, representation, and a voice in decisions that affect their lives. That is why the office of Secretary of State matters. The Secretary of State is not simply an administrative position. The office sits at the center of election administration, voter access, election integrity, and public confidence in our democratic process. This Saturday, delegates are not simply choosing a candidate. They are choosing who will carry the Democratic banner into November and who may ultimately become Indiana's next Secretary of State. As you cast your vote, look beyond names, family connections, political endorsements, and personalities. Ask yourself: Who understands the importance of protecting voting rights? Who will ensure fair access to the ballot box? Who understands that democracy works best when every eligible voter can participate? Who has demonstrated the courage, integrity, and commitment necessary to protect our elections?
