Album: The Innocent Age (1981).  The Story Behind the Song The song was written by Dan Fogelberg as a tribute to his father, Lawrence Fogelberg. Lawrence was a respected musician, music educator, and the director of bands at Woodruff High School and later Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.  🌏📌Lawrence Fogelberg, the musician, educator, and inspiration for son Dan Fogelberg’s 1981 hit "Leader of the Band," died in 1982 a year after the song released.
