In the southern part of the US we had dog trot cottages. Very similar in theory.

in America there are similar spaces in dog trot houses, but also in shotgun or double shotgun homes. before air conditioning this allowed a breeze to funnel through the home, & also helped provide clean air

So interesting thank you, I grew up in a modest cottage in Somerset that had been a basket making cottage for most of its history and there was a passage like this with a flag stone floor through the middle of the house that was quite different to a normal cottage layout, it never occurred to me that it might be this

these were brought to the US by settlers and theyre called dog trot houses here and the hallway itself is called a breezeway
