There is no need to reinvent the wheel. There are open-source software options and reliable hardware like hvac, lights, security and so on.

super cool. I'm actually building this as a product specifically targeted at elderly care. I originally wrote it in node, with sqlite as a backend, but I've moved to rust, and written my own cut down mqtt server, with a nice web frontend, and full local API. I wanted to see if I could move from a rpi cm5 to an esp32, and it looks like I can. it's still early days but it cuts my product cost by any £60. keep it up, I'd be very interested how you get on
