@floriangadsby: Here’s a selection of recently made and reduction fired lidded forms, do you have any favourites? If I could make one type of pot for the rest of my life, I think it would be lidded forms. They’re challenging and I find the process of turning the two parts to match fulfilling and highly rewarding post firing, once the joins have been flooded with valve lapping paste and ground to glassy finish. They’re also very resilient in the kiln, the sturdy lids keep the bodies lips perfectly round, which means functionally, they make great pots to line the edges of the kiln shelves, where other pots mightn’t fare quite so well due to being in the path of the flame. Lastly, there’s their function, despite many of these being too small for use on a day-to-day basis, many of them are great for pouring things into, (say coffee beans or peppercorns or flakey salt), then the contents can be poured out when needed. With that, although not with the same pour out context in mind, I’ve started to larger jars with the intent being for them to be used as urns. The narrow-footed vessels seem to fit into that category the most for me, perhaps as they remind me slightly of Egyptian Canopic jars. The tapering lower half doesn’t lend itself well in terms of stability but it certainly creates an object that has some prowess and elegance to it, almost figurative perhaps, with the tapering lower half resembling the legs, the wider, angular section the torso, and the hefty, quite notable lid sometimes feeling like the head. I hope you like these as much as I do and I hope to see many in my upcoming shop restocks. #pottery #jar #urn #handmade #ceramics
