Battle of Midway (June 4–7, 1942) The Battle of Midway was a crucial naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II, fought between the United States and Japan near Midway Atoll. It is considered a turning point in the war because it shifted the momentum in favor of the Allies. Background: After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Japan aimed to expand its control across the Pacific. Midway Atoll was strategically important because it could threaten Hawaii and allow Japan to extend its defensive perimeter. Japan planned a surprise attack on Midway to lure the U.S. aircraft carriers into battle. The Battle: The U.S. had broken Japanese codes, so they knew the attack was coming. American carriers USS Enterprise, USS Hornet, and USS Yorktown were ready and waiting. On June 4, Japanese aircraft attacked Midway, but U.S. forces counterattacked. American dive bombers sank four Japanese carriers—Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu—changing the course of the war. Aftermath: Japan lost many experienced pilots and most of its carrier fleet, severely weakening its naval power. The U.S., though suffering# damage, retained most of its strength and gained confidence. The battle marked the beginning of Allied offensive operations in the Pacific. #History #ww2 #america #fyp
