I’m having a baby in two weeks and it’s killing me there are no in between options. Either I have to work 40+ hours to stay on my career track or I have to sacrifice it forever. We need more flexible policies systems that allow for families to have both parents working but ALSO taking ample time to be with their families. We’d be a way more productive country, but lawmakers and lobbies want to keep the status quo.

Well said! This is such a multifaceted issue but from my perspective our government is failing miserably to recognize the importance of supporting families (1 or 2 parent) and children. It’s an investment in our future!

The other reason - even if you can stay home for a little while, that employment gap is the gap that keeps on giving. It's like turning the clock back on your career and earning potential.

It’s crazy that there aren’t more options for less than 40h workweek for office jobs. I think decoupling benefits from employment would help employers be more flexible there

I'm sure it's known, but I don't think it hurts to reiterate; Being a "stay at home mom" IS Working. Care Work, even for family, is Work. Young or Old or somewhere in-between, just because money isn't moving hands, that doesn't invalidate the work being done!

And offer us more hybrid options. Even as a work-from-home mom, sending my child to preschool was important to me. 3 days a week in preschool can still be great. Remember when half-day kindergarten was still an option in the 80s? I love how you’re pushing back on the “either this or that” narrative that limits real solutions.

The federal government already spends 80% of the budget on social services, income support, and medical care.

I would have loved to stay at home with my babies even for a few months beyond FMLA. When my 1st son was born so FMLA didn't exist. I had to go back to work after 6 weeks. I was the primary wage earner & carried the health benefits so working was necessary. We couldn't live on my husband's salary. That's life.

Just wish I could work part time and keep my benefits. That way my partner and I can work half the week while the other stays at home half the week. I like my job, and I like my income, I just wish there were more part time or 12 hour shift options for people.

As a business owner with an all women team this is so hard. I give fully paid 3 months maternity leave but I don’t think the financial burden should be entirely on the business. I do it because I want my employees to feel supported and I have a soul I just wish our representatives did too.

My husband had to go to a job where he is on the road 40 weeks a year. The local daycares closed at 5pm and were more an hour than I made. I would have owed money in order to keep my job. That was 20 years ago. I can’t imagine how bad it is now.

This is the bane of my frustration as a working mom. I am also the higher income earner in the home so I do not have a choice. I am 10 weeks post partum and going back in 6 weeks. I’m already p’d off about it.

Oh man you hit a nerve. I’m a college grad who graduated when mortgage rates were 18%. I had no choice but to go to work and we both made decent income. I was constantly felt like I was not a good mom because I worked. Today, my girls are both college graduates with careers in Education. The women I know who chose to stay home have adult children who still live at home. I don’t know what the answer is but a happy mom is a great role model
