Official Documentation To ensure George was treated with the same respect as any other sailor, the crew went through the effort of creating formal paperwork for him: • The Liberty Card: George was issued an official ID card that granted him "liberty" (permission to leave the ship) when they were in port. The Legacy of Navy Cats While George is one of the better-documented examples, he was part of a long tradition. For centuries, "ships' cats" were considered essential crew members. They were often the only animals allowed on board because of their utility in hunting vermin.
