The story of George the Kitten is one of the more lighthearted tales to emerge from the Pacific Theater of World War II. In 1944, the crew of the USS New Mexico (a Tennessee-class battleship) pulled the small, bedraggled cat from the ocean after he was found struggling in the water. Rather than just keeping him as an unofficial mascot, the crew decided to make George a fully "enlisted" member of the United States Navy. Official Documentation To ensure George was treated with the same respect as any other sailor, the crew went through the effort of creating formal paperwork for him: • The Liberty Card: George was issued an official ID card that granted him "liberty" (permission to leave the ship) when they were in port. This was a morale-boosting gesture that showed how much the crew valued their small companion. • Medical Records: He had a detailed health record maintained by the ship’s medical staff. It tracked his growth, vaccinations, and general well-being, just like a human service member. • Service Record: His papers often listed his "rating" or job. On most naval vessels, cats were indispensable for pest control, protecting the ship’s food supplies and wiring from rats. Life Aboard the USS New Mexico George wasn't just a pet; he was a symbol of home and normalcy for men living under the constant threat of combat. Life on a battleship was loud, cramped, and stressful. Having a kitten roaming the decks, sleeping in hammocks, and attending inspections helped break the tension of the war. The New Mexico was a "lucky" ship for much of the war, participating in major operations from the Gilbert Islands to the invasion of Okinawa. Throughout these intense naval battles, George remained a constant fixture of the crew's daily life. The Legacy of Navy Cats While George is one of the better-documented examples, he was part of a long tradition. For centuries, "ships' cats" were considered essential crew members. They were often the only animals allowed on board because of their utility in hunting vermin. George’s specific story stands out because of the meticulous detail the crew put into his "personnel file," effectively immortalizing him in naval history. #fyp #cat #History #cute #wow
