Well, as far as I know, there are still difficulties in defining consciousness. For me, the best definition comes from Thomas Nagel "there is consciousness when there is something that is like to BE a system". The question is: how on earth could we know if something is conscious if it doesn't respond and we can't be sure through measurements like fMRI?
