My run club does a lot of timed out and backs. We all end up running different distances but all finish at the same time. Run 20 mins then turn around and run back, etc.

Perhaps run clubs should be about community and not training. If you can run a 6min mile but the slowest runner is going at a 12min pace, just run the 12min pace (for example). I just bc you can run a 6min pace doesn’t mean a run club needs to be your 6min training run. Just go along with the group and enjoy each other’s company, no? And if you run 6min mile and wanna run a 6min mile it sounds like maybe a run club isn’t for you?? Idk. I don’t think run clubs should be a training meetup. It’s about community! (These are just some of my opinions)

My local club does a set time out and back. So theoretically everyone finishes at the same time. You run for 20 minutes one way. And then turn around and run back. Everyone gets swept up by the end and socializes.

My favorite thing about run clubs are that I always go a liiiittle faster than I would if I was alone because I want to keep up with people

I went to a tracksmith event & LOVED how they did it. They actually stopped half way and we all circled up to stretch. It gave a chance for people to catch up but still feel a part of the group. Then did something different at the end.

My local club does pace groups, with a sweeper. This lets people make informed decisions. I go for social reasons though, so I’m more than happy to turn it into a run/walk to sweep. It’s such a small percentage of my weekly mileage..who cares if I run it extra easy to hang out with some newbies

Question. Is 14minute/mile (+ stoping to walk for a couple min every other mile )too slow to join a run club? Or should I work on my endurance and getting faster on my own before I join one?

Why don’t you do 2 or 3 pacers with different groups

My run club has Pacers, but also offers something called community pace, which is a pace crew where the point of it is to fall run together no matter what that pace is. Sometimes it’s a 12 minute mile sometimes it’s a 14 minute mile sometimes we stopped for a walk breaks and pictures and high-fives. It’s not a perfect solution, but it has helped.

Yes as a back of the pack runner I can’t stand feeling like I’m slowing people down! Makes me feel like I should be running as fast as I can to avoid inconveniencing others when I showed up wanting to go at a conversational pace.

I colead a workout group called November project (there’s groups that meet weekly all around the US) that works around this by putting everyone on a short (~max .25 miles) loop and sometimes adding bodyweight exercises! Everyone can get the distance/pace they’re looking for, no one gets left behind, and everyone gets to spend time in community together.

My group in Boston (@amalia🏃🏼♀️🥦🌸 hi local) we all meet, and run in a maybe .4 circular loop for a set amount of time! That way, people of different paces can stick together, and groups of different paces can pass each other on loops socially!! So I’ll run at my pace with some, and then I’ll still pass faster people across our different laps of the loop!!

my go to run clubs goal is community first, running second! they literally mean it when they say no runner left behind, back of the pack runners get cheered on as they join us for our dance breaks! check them out @TrailblazHers Run Co. ™
