@thepottymouthguru: Replying to @halfpint (Liter) Children do not need perfect parents. They need parents who can tolerate imperfection, accountability, repair, and emotional discomfort without collapsing into defensiveness, denial, blame reversal, shutdown, or emotional retaliation. Because when a child grows up with chronically defensive parents, they often learn: 👉 softness doesn’t work 👉 reality disappears unless I push 👉 repair is unstable 👉 accountability is emotionally dangerous So later in life, some of those children become adults who feel emotionally urgent around accountability, acknowledgment, and repair. Not because they’re “crazy” or controlling but because their nervous system adapted to years of failed repair. ❤️🤟🏻🌿 #unfuckyourself #thepottymouthguru #relationships #childhoodtrauma #attachmentstyles

The Pottymouth Guru :
Some adults are not overreacting to accountability conversations. They’re reacting to what accountability felt like in their childhood home.

As a kid my parents always said “I’m not perfect so don’t expect me to be.” Whenever me and my siblings said anything negative to or about them. I have to explain everything as thoroughly as I can because if someone thinks I’m saying it in a bad way then they’ll get mad at me so I’ll start rambling on and on. I’ve been told to stop over explaining but if I don’t then I get such bad anxiety.

Is this why I associate things like accountability as punishment?

As a parent I’ve learned that apology has been engrained in me as weak, and now with my kids I try so hard to apologize like it’s no big deal even if inside I’m struggling with my own stuff.

I am just trying to imagine feeling safe enough to say "that hurt me" as a child.

Exactly this. The other day I told my mother I know everyone makes mistakes, and I’m very forgiving but I can’t if you won’t even take accountability for what you’ve done. She didn’t and went on to rewrite reality. I’m done explaining now

also, people who over apologize for literally anything they think might bother someone else. I used to do that

On the edge of my seat to hear what we can do without over explaining and coming at people with urgency, when they simply refuse to take accountability even when we communicate it as gently as possible. This exact dynamic shows up in my relationship with my mother and my adult romantic relationships. Thank you for speaking on it.

My last relationship put a lens on this over the past 2 years. I was over contextualizing everything, driving myself nuts. I had my reasons, but I don’t like the version of myself I was becoming — I’m taking the lesson to heart.

It’s very hard to see your partner be this person and to deal with it and also see it transferring to our children. So while I empathize with him, I also have to protect my children. It’s existing trying to balance everyone.

I have been really struggling with this recently. Contemplating going no contact with my mom because of it because I’m tired of the surface level and no accountability. Also allowing myself to be soft and accept the love my fiancé is trying to give me without feeling like it’s going to disappear

there was a joke in my house that "mom is never wrong." as I got older I realized it was never really a joke, but a rule.
