ECG Press Conference on 20th April 2026: Timelines of the various investment programme to restore reliability and transform our network capacity. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has developed a comprehensive, phased investment programme totalling GHS 3.46 billion to address the current reliability crisis and transform the network’s capacity. This programme is structured into five categories based on urgency and implementation timelines, and with the support of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, ECG is committed to executing it. Under Category 1, which focuses on Immediate Interventions within up to six months at a cost of GHS 278 million, ECG is implementing rapid measures to stabilise supply and improve voltage quality. These interventions include the injection of 2,500 distribution transformers to relieve overloaded stations across all operational areas, replacement of hundreds of damaged transformers and associated materials such as Ring Main Units and Distribution Pillars, and replacement of 1,600 rotten poles in the low-voltage network under Operation Keep the Lights On (OKLO). Additional actions include the installation of 2,500 eleven-metre treated poles for network reinforcement under OKLO, provision of cable termination and joint kits for underground cable fault rectification across 33kV and 11kV systems, replacement of rectifiers and protection systems at substations across Accra East, Accra West, Ashanti, Tema, Western, and Volta regions, and distribution of 28,000 fuses and 240 distribution panels to restore and protect low-voltage networks. Category 2, which covers Short-to-Medium Term Investments over six to twelve months with a budget of GHS 1.2 billion, focuses on more substantial network construction and reinforcement. This phase includes the construction of new Distribution Control Transfer Links (DCTL) to provide alternative supply paths, continuation and completion of stalled primary substation projects, continuation of the Regional System Improvement Projects (RSIP) across all regions, injection of additional distribution transformers to relieve overloaded networks, upgrading of undersized conductors to improve system voltages, replacement of damaged and multi-jointed underground cables, and installation of network control equipment such as Vacuum Interrupter Technologies, isolators, and reclosers. Category 3, which addresses Backbone Infrastructure over twelve to eighteen months at a cost of GHS 1.93 billion, consists of investments aimed at permanently transforming ECG’s capacity to deliver reliable power. These include the construction of new 11kV and 33kV feeders to relieve chronically overloaded lines, conversion of selected feeders from 11kV to 33kV to improve voltages and reduce losses, continuation of Regional System Improvement Projects and large-scale transformer injection, and acquisition of drones for network inspection to enhance the identification of defects and hotspots on medium-voltage lines. Category 4, covering Other Backbone Projects over eighteen to twenty-four months with a budget of GHS 58.2 million, includes the construction of a sub-transmission link from Station E (Graphic Road) to D (Avenor) in Accra, re-insulation of selected feeders including Afam Plains and Prampram from 11kV to 33kV, reconfiguration of the Aseesewa 33kV feeder, works on the Suhum-Nsawam feeder, and construction of substations in the LETAP, Bui Aque, and Borteyman areas. Finally, Category 5, which focuses on Project Support Resources within up to six months at a cost of GHS 32.2 million, involves the procurement of critical field resources to support project execution. These include 14 pickup vehicles, 50 boom trucks ranging from 3-tonne to 10-tonne capacity, 4 bucket trucks, and 104 chainsaws, all of which are essential to enabling field teams to carry out works efficiently across all operational areas.
