@annaarmannn: this is just ONE reason why it’s so deep rooted in all of us. but when you become aware of it, then you can actually start to change it #beautystandards #beautystandard #womenshealth #health #women
It’s capitalism. Fashion values smaller models because smaller = less fabric = less expensive to make = more profit

i think partly its a result of the abundance of food nowadays. back when food was harder to get being more full is a sign of wealth because it shows off your access to food. Now having access to food is no longer seen as difficult and is not a status symbol.

Yes!! I also think it partly comes from the idea of irony or a certain sense of being ‘unreal’ - “look I can eat so much and stay very little: like a magical creature”. Or even the aesthetic of seeming like a miracle. People are drawn to things they don’t understand.

I’m a recovering ED girlie and currently wedding dress shopping, the amount of people who have specified a tight dress looks better on me because I shouldn’t hide my small figure... it’s exhausting!

for me, I suffer with body dysmorphia so I see myself as much bigger than I am, I want to lose weight all the time to be slimmer but it's because I still think that I am big and u healthy 😢 crazy thing is I was happy with my body when I was big. I lost 13 stone for health and now criticize my body constantly

A few years ago, I thought we were finally breaking the skinny ideal from 90s, finally embracing body diversity without unrealistic standards. I’m so sad in my lifetime I’ve watched it come round full circle. I hope these conversations continue for the sake of women and girls 💖 if/when i have children i don’t want them ever hearing me talk about diets and thinness and hating my body. We need to break this cycle!!

also think about how high fashion and fashion shows demonstrate over exaggerated clothes because they aren't clothing but art. they can spend as much fabric as they want because it's only one item and not a massive production while the smallest the item like baby tops are massively produced because many people are meant to wear them

This is so interesting! Also I think I read somewhere that dieting was promoted around the 1950s because of the need to ration food because of the war. So they found ways to make people want to diet to save food and help the economy

I still remember the first time I saw Greek sculptors and paintings of that style and being so surprised and in awe of my body type being displayed as beautiful, as an early 90’s baby, it’s something that had NEVER been shown to me until then

When you said “it doesn’t come from you” that felt so healing because it means someone hurt me by making me think this way, rather than meaning I did something evil by wanting it

This is so valuable to know. Also I love viewing gaining muscle as more than just physical changesbut a representation of hard work and discipline, which is so adorable especially for women as it’s harder for us!! xx

I think photography had a lot to do with it, negative space being something that can make photos look better composition-wise and smaller bodies capable of creating shapes which allow for negative space would make a lot of sense.
