“At what point does “just doing your job” become participation in something harmful.” When the organization is structurally designed to “produce harm.” Everything Lockheed Martin does is to reach their end goal. Even if you think a cog is insignificant within a machine, it’s still there because it’s needed (assuming we’ve accounted for redundancy) within the overall context of the machine. Moreover, I don’t get why people are critical of endorsing these corporations with capitals, but they’re okay with people endorsing these corporations with their labor? The very labor that these corporations are willing to spend the aforementioned capital on?

Why did she apply, interview, and accepted the offer from LM like it’s the only company in the world she can work for? she ain’t in a system where she has no choice other than to work for them, so the entire discourse about individual in a system doesn’t make sense.

This is exactly why I like my job. I treat drinking water for my city. I make enough to get by. I consider myself extremely fortunate.

this looks like another incarnation of "no ethical consumption under capitalism". when you build a system in which the punishment for not working is destitution and starvation, then people will take the unethical jobs to save themselves. yes working a job like that is a choice, but it's not a fair choice.

I’m an aerospace engineer & have previously worked for companies like LM & Boeing. While I worked for their space systems & missile defense systems divisions, I struggled, ethnically, working with them. If I, & other engineers didn’t do our jobs? - no Artemis II. On the other hand, do we need Artemis II? Also, it’s extremely difficult for our engineering grads to find work without working with one of those companies at some point during their career. So do we start telling our kids to stop becoming engineers? These are moral dilemmas I struggled with as a young engineer (I’m semi retired now), & I certainly don’t envy our engineering grads.

Another important question is: What do we want from accountability? The way we hold someone accountable is important, and depends on the outcome we seek. Is it a comment meant to make a person think about their choices? Social media cancellation? Something larger? Because if we go around dispensing accountability in ways that don’t change the system, are we doing it right?

the architect and the builder are not excempt of guilt, the same as the one who hires them…the action and participation have consequences, the same as inaction

To say it is an oxymoron to be an ethicist and work for a company like Lockheed Martin is to already silently impose a normative position on the matter. Simply being an “Ethicist” doesn’t carry any burden of needing to be apart of your particular viewpoint.
