Having just reached the conclusion that someone very dear to me did not have the availability to communicate with me for 1 hour in the last 20 years (that's some 170.000 hours) was one of the most heartbreaking things in the world (imagine we have lived in the same place for 19 out of those 20 years). It was just conflict with every attempt to communicate I've made, because I was perceived as annoying because I talked and wanted to discuss important things (I'm not saying this lightly). So yes, it's time, but also attention and the desire to be present and actively participate in engaging with the other person. If they give you time but they just talk about themselves, or are just there without listening and responding appropriately, that's not time well spent. I think we need to get our priorities straight as far as what we need and expect so we avoid heartache.
