I’ve always seen Homelander as just a flawed man from the beginning, watching the boys it irked me that he was the main ‘villain’. I felt like there had to be a greater antagonist, Homelander isn’t near pure evil. He projects his insecurity onto everyone else, he’s careless but he doesn’t seek to hurt. Just “whatever it takes”. But now I realise, even if he isn’t the typical villain his ways still hurt people and to everyone else there’s no room for forgiveness. He lacks empathy and cannot fathom how much his actions affect the people around him while they’re all well aware how it affects them. Homelander just needed a good and safe person to look up to, Soldier boy came closest though his approach only dug at his son’s insecurities.
