The moral I see is that it doesn't matter how far along we are, in the right situation a vice that held us entirely can destroy us again. As someone who stopped drinking almost 3 years ago and I find it easy working in a pub but requires all my self control if someone near me lights a joint not to ask for some the parallel is clear and in this situation absolutely heartbreaking

the moral is: life is messy, and sometimes things happen and there is no moral, there is nothing to learn from what happened, it just happened. we search for meaning in everything, so when there is none, we as humans just dont know how to cope.

I think there is also a thing about how heroic it is for people who struggle with addiction to help other people in addiction. The most flammable people CHOOSING to help others escape the flames. The flames that have burned them so much in their own lives.

I think it is a story about envy, shame and resentment making a person act the tempter in order to prove to himself that the other person is no better than him. If there is a moral I think that is the importance of impressing upon each other, that no two people are a like, and that difference does not make us better or worse than anyone else. What works for one person may not work for the other. Shame is a terrible human made construct and we have to be careful not to perpetuate it by judging each other’s way of life as wrong. That is hard when we see the harm that they cause to themselves and others. All we can do is to tap into empathy, not pity, and try to show people that they have options.

Really thought-provoking stuff. Thank you. I think where you went with the broader commentary is spot on. One of those men was being a perfect cog in the machine. Primed to keep the system going in several ways. My main other thought was, we have to be sure of our ethics and morals, independent of results. You can treat everyone you meet exactly how you'd want to be treated, without error, and some will spit in your face. We can't allow that to jade us. Make us ever more cynical. And thats incredibly hard. Im quite cynical myself. Thank you for sharing.

The moral of the story is not everything happens for a reason. Sometimes life demonstrates how indifferent and unfair it is just because . And because of that we must imbue the world with as much empathy as possible, because in the end it doesn’t care, and that’s exactly why we should.

I think the moral is that the idea of recovery from addiction is an illusion. People who suffer from addiction have brains that process the world differently. You can’t really cure a disability, you can only add supports. Like Obnoxious flow said above, it’s all about timing and how many supports are active in that moment.

care needs to be selective left for those that are actually wanting help, and we should trust our own judgement and not what we are told we should do. The question about how do you stop someone from taking advantage along with his complete disregard for the health of the environment and those in it was a warning, he was not there to get help he was there to extract like a parasite and you were given that warning you saw it and because of the size of your heart and your desire to not discriminate in an environment that requires it to survive protect and care you contributed to the death of someone who was there for real healing which requires a symbiotic on some level relationship. You cannot help and heal someone who is not willing to at least try to be in symbiosis with the environment that cares for them and only takes from it reciprocal care on some level is needed for healing without it it's just extraction and harms everything in the environment. I'm sorry this was a reality for you it is so hard when we are part of what pushes the line to the end and we can't see it but in hindsight. I've been there I didn't do it it wasn't my fault but I could have made a different choice and it may have changed the outcome but I didn't know there was a different choice to make at the time she showed me that and as much as it hurts I'll make sure the lesson is never lost just like you're making sure the one given to you isn't.

Paused and reflecting on morality: there’s more ways to see “good” than just the outcome. Each moment of the trying counts too. Hyper fixation on outcomes makes us like “Bill”. That’s my initial thought after working in similar spaces, tho I’m confident I’ll be deeply inspired by your finding of meanings as usual.

pausing to comment. with 19 years in recovery on me, I'm not sure what the moral of the story is. for me it feels like a reminder that I am both men. I am you. I am every decision that I make when I make it and until I make a new one. it's a reminder that I need to keep making the best choices for everyone around me because they are me and I am them.

I'm not smart, but I think the moral is it's still worth it to invest in people, just for today. Tomorrow and yesterday might indeed suck, but just between us, just for today, we can choose to see the best in each other and like you said, help each other.

I think the moral is that the world is full of cunning people, who will tear down people who are better than them or have something they dont. Just like the saying no good deed goes unpunished, Grants good deed didnt go unpunished. Its a sad reality that most people will throw anybody under the bus to get something even if its trivial.
