You can be born in a Samsung Medical Center, learn to read on a Samsung tablet, attend Samsung-affiliated Sungkyunkwan University on a Samsung scholarship. You can live in a Samsung-built apartment, wash your clothes in a Samsung machine, work on a Samsung laptop, get married at the Samsung wedding hall, retire on a pension whose largest single holding is Samsung shares, and end up at a Samsung funeral parlor. Samsung alone produces around 17 percent of South Korea's GDP. Bloomberg Economics calculated that Samsung Electronics was responsible for roughly half of Korea's projected 2024 economic growth. The top five Korean conglomerates together produce 40 percent of national output. An economist at Seoul National University estimated that a Samsung collapse would push Korean unemployment up seven percentage points, take the insurance industry with it, and trigger an economic event larger than the 1997 IMF crisis. The pension fund can't vote against Samsung management because doing so would crater the pension fund. When a company reaches into that many corners of life, it stops being something anyone can rationally evaluate. It becomes the medium through which evaluation happens. Is that a company, or is that just gravity?
