That’s one of the most cruel things you can say to someone!! 18 years alcohol free remains his truth, and it is something to be celebrated deeply

It really gives an all or nothing approach and that can be so defeating for people and make it to where they dont even want to start because of fear of messing up.

I’m 35 and I’m over one year now. I’ve never felt this happy and content in previous sober stints. I used to get so caught up in what I thought was the right way to get sober. You have to do what feels right for you.

Sober is a lot different than being off the drink .. i was in AA and off the drink 1 year but now in AA sober 26 years .. two many people get this mixed up

I couldn’t do AA, I’m young and lost my father to drinks and mental health and ontop of my own. I have a sobriety date for drinks and I do still garden but my hard reduction and days sober matter!

Everyone is different. If you ‘garden’ occasionally then you don’t have a problem with it. I tried that but ended up with an addiction to that too. So for me, I personally can’t get away with occasional use, but lots of people can. The question for the individual is are you happy with your occasional use or maybe would you prefer to abstain from that substance too? It should only ever be a personal choice, no sponsor should determine this for you.

it's important to remember that this is just one person's opinion. a great follow-up statement to something like this would be we often say progress not perfection. and then that would be your opinion. and in that way you have something in common with this man that you so disagree with

Anyone who gets angry and objects harm reduction while struggling with addiction themselves is a lost cause tbh, and they’ll have to learn the hard way when they lose a loved one because it was there way or the highway! We all want the same fucking thing here, should all be on one United team. I totally feel you for getting riled up about this.

this is one of the things that was hard for me too. I don’t think that AA needs to be all inclusive of everything. Alcohol was my problem alcohol. Just alcohol OK? I do use herb. That’s not my problem, but it’s everybody else’s problem. Nine years sober from alcohol and my life is completely different. That’s why AA doesn’t always work for me and doesn’t work for everybody. I don’t need the judgment. thank you!

Here’s my thing about AA, it is literally helping people so the whole “it works if you work it” works for some people! I don’t care what helps people, just as long as it is helping!! Some people “need” AA. And I still believe wholeheartedly that it can save lives, though maybe not the path for all of us alcoholics/addicts.

Omg when I started AA last year I was still trying to safely limit my drinking and I kept hearing stories of people saying they had strokes, heart attacks etc while detoxing and it scared me so badly I kept drinking

I fucking completely agree.... this was one of the main reasons why I stopped going to AA because I still smoke weed and I'm still sober from everything else and I don't understand how they can smoke cigarettes like they're going out of style but yet I can't smoke a little pot here and there 🤣🤷

I’m in AA and still garden I don’t care what people think lol. I’m sober from alcohol and it’s literally called Alcoholics Anonymous. Not caring so deeply about people’s opinions is life changing. The only requirement is the desire to QUIT DRINKING. F em
