@cathrinmanningg: We were both a little shocked by the way it all went down but how do you handle speaking to your kiddo about not nice situations?! #parenting

I had a situation a few years back with my young niece. She’s very social and tried to make friends with 2 little girls at a playgrounds she asked if they wanted to play a the said ‘no’.. which is fine, but when my niece walked away they said to eachother ‘she was weird 🤨’ and my niece heard. I couldn’t let that go, she looked so sad. So I walked up to them and nicely said, because I think it can be a teachable moment for everyone, ‘it’s totally fine if you don’t want to be friends with her or even play with her, but it’s not nice to call her weird. That’s really hurtful’ and I left it at that. I reinforced to my niece that the way the girls acted had nothing to do with her, and that they were just not acting very nice.

I had a situation where older kids were like blocking my kid from coming into a play house at the park. I just said “these kids aren’t being kind, let’s go find somewhere else to play” and it seemed to work but it is soo hard to know what to do/say in those situations

Pretty much same, I tell my kiddo not everyone is gonna be kind and we don’t have to play with them if that’s the case. I do try and teach them to speak up (he’s 7) he’s so just docile so he struggles to speak up when he doesn’t like something. We’re working on it! Lol

I let my kiddos know that not everyone knows how to communicate in an appropriate way, and that sometimes ends in a not great way. We then talk about next steps.

My daughter is 3 almost 4 and we also try to use those moments as teachable for her in a how did that feel kind of way and that we don’t hurt others with our words or actions but it’s hard when they’re so young to explain enough but not too much

I had a situation a couple months back, where my son age 5 and I were at the public library and he was using the Lego on the ground. Other children were playing also. A little girl maybe around 4-5years old started throwing Lego in my son’s face. He stood up and said stop throwing Lego it’s not nice. He said it 3x times then I intervened and went over and said no throwing Lego it’s not kind we are building with Lego only… then they stopped and my son and I continued to build Lego. I just explained to my son that not every kid knows how to play with strangers or how to share and that’s okay but we never retaliate back.

ECE here (not that that makes me an expert or anything lol) I think you handled it so well. I’ve had situations where I had to speak to the child being hurt and the one doing the hurting. Especially at cuties young age I may tell them that not everyone has learned to be kind yet. Or not everyone is kind. Period. I love that you added that he does not need to tolerate that. Kids will be kids but it doesn’t excuse being mean. Although we should be kind, We do not need to be friends with everyone. We’re never too young to set a boundary. I’ve also said to a kid being physical ‘it’s ok if you don’t want to be friends with so and so, but it’s not ok to hit, push, be mean ect. And not all parents will discipline their children doing the bullying, so more reason to reinforce boundaries. Running into bullies doesn’t stop after childhood unfortunately. Good on you for teaching him early ❤️❤️❤️

I usually just say “that wasnt very nice. let’s find someone else to play with” depending on what side of the bed I woke up on I’ll say it loud enough for the other kids parents to hear haha

I think you nailed it! It always helps when the other parents are also holding their kids accountable. We have to remind my oldest (7 with a limb difference) that after something like that happens either teasing or physically that it’s okay to just tell people “I don’t want to play right now” when they aren’t being nice to you.

it sounds like you handled it well. I also make sure to let them know, if its appropriate for the situation, that they didn't do anything wrong and didn't deserve that to happen to their body. I also usually add an "I'm so sorry that happened to your body!"

I pretty much say what you say “not everyone is nice, we don’t surround ourselves with people like that” And if the parents did nothing about the situation I say loud enough, we weren’t all raised kind so then they hurt others. They usually leave after that or pretend they didn’t see what happened and get there kid to apologize who clearly didn’t want to.

It’s situational. I tell my son “you just tell them no thank and if they do it again come tell me” except this one time these kids at a play place were VIOLENT I told him to ask them nicely once and if they do it again hit them back. He’s 3 and I’m not raising a pushover (this is the cliff notes version btw)
