Like I get why aang would like katara. I just don’t get why katara would like Aang. There’s nothing in it for her. You can see in the new movie and in its implied in Korra that she was the one giving to him, catering to his needs, doing what he needed and wanted her to do. What did she get out of that?? I’m struck while watching the new movie that she always goes to him, comforts him. What is she getting out of that?? He never seems to put her first or offer her comfort first. It’s a one sided relationship. She gives and he takes. It hurts my heart that it’s that way for the rest of kataras life. She never has anyone who puts her first, even her own children

Kataang has aangs entire name. Its dominating. Zutara is balanced. Half of each name, much like their relationship 😭😭 we were robbed! Zutara ❤️💙

Also we see what it’s like when Katara has crushes that develop naturally, that she’s enthusiastic about. She feels things intensely, and unless she’s shoving her feelings down for the good of the group so she can rally and keep them safe as their mother figure (as moms do), the audience is never clueless about how Katara feels about something or someone.

It feels like the writers were so set on giving kataang will-they-won’t-they tension that they thought it would be better for the audience to never see their relationship through Katara’s POV, which only served to remove her agency. How does a romantic relationship with Aang serve Katara’s character/character arc? What new sides of her does it show us? I agree with your point at the end completely—ATLA may not be a romance, but writing a compelling romantic plotline takes skill, and it felt like the writers didn’t respect that.

THIS THIS THIS! I was wondering what I was missing and how to explain why I don’t ship Kataang and this is perfectly described. I absolutely think that Katara convinced herself to like Aang because why not? He’s the avatar, she cares for him, he is REALLY into her, so why not choose him? I just think that it’s one of those things where you convince yourself to date the guy because he checks all the boxes but something is still missing. That spark, the giddiness, the passion, that thing that makes you kick your feet and giggle. I’m so upset about how Katara’s life panned out after ATLA, because of her choosing to be with Aang. And people wonder why she gets shipped with Zuko. Because he took the first opportunity to help her, to give her the chance to face her trauma, all the while he just followed her lead. And when her life was in danger, he ultimately laid his down on the line for her. When nobody else in the world could understand her, Zuko did. The writers had plenty of opportunities to write Kataang beautifully, but they chose not to. And at the end of the day, Katara is the one to suffer and I DESPISE that.

I disagree. Katara’s feelings and why she likes him are pretty obvious and you get hints of that since episode 1. Aang is someone who supports her endlessly and often reminds her that she doesn’t NEED to be parentified because she is also a child. Its simply a case of Aang felt first, Katara fell harder.

I’m a big Zutara fan but it is disappointing that the writers didn’t put in the work for Kataang. Like season 1 did a good job at laying the building blocks for that romance and then never follows through on it. Like imagine how good “the headband” dance could have been if that dynamic was how they were all the time, but it’s not. We’re never shown that.

In the cave of two lovers, I also think she was trying to experiment due to the prediction to see if she liked him. She was also inspired by the story of the two lovers itself. But when she found out it wasn’t anything major, she stuffed reciprocating during the invasion and Ember Island.

it’s absolutely forced lol. and you want to know why? bc they originally were going to do one-sided kataang where aang had a crush on katara, but katara never felt the same way. that’s why she acts oblivious to his crush 99% of the series even tho if she had liked him all along, they could’ve been dating since s1.

I think there is this short comic about katara and her perspective for book 2 but it’s like y’all couldn’t have adapted that into the show itself. And there is so many episodes out there in the show that the creators could have easily given us her perspective😭😭

kataang has grown on me, but I really do wish that there was just a bit more growth on them. I wish there were more examples of Katara liking Aang romantically in the show outside of her being jealous that he's attracting romantic attention of other girls, because that makes up a majority of the hints that she likes him

Katang on Katara's side to me either feels like she's humoring him or being pressured by things outside of herself most the time. and I do think she does get jealous, but also he's the first boy she knows outside of her brother and he's so obviously infatuated with her and he respects her as a bender in a way Sokka doesn't get. Sokka is literally her only peer for most her life, of course she's going to want that attention still being 14 and wanting to feel valued is so real and the awe of someone younger makes you feel mature and strong and cool. they do have moment but idk any feel wholly and organically on Katara without some kind of influence or pressure.

Yeah Aunt Wu’s premonition was the creators’ hand so visibly in the narrative it is so jarring honestly. For someone as stubborn as katara and defiantly willing to break societal norms she lets “destiny” and “fate” just decide for her who she should end up with?! it’s not logical at all knowing katara and how she fought against Pakku telling her women can’t be warriors and can only be healers (ironically after she gets with aang she becomes strongly tied to the role of a healer)

I have to comment again 😂😂 but in a serious note I hated how tenzin treated katara. like boy she gave you life there would have been no airbender to train korra if she didnt.

like how many times does aang have to scream about being the last airbender to katara and the gaang? I understand that he is a flawed character like alot of the gaang but he should not have ended up with her

I kinda understand, although throughout the show they felt more like siblings sometimes (and aang has a little brother vibe), i think he represents what Katara wants and needs out of life. He’s the hope of the world incarnated, he’s spiritually awakened, and more of a calm presence. I feel like he’s what she was looking for, in the world and in herself. She didn’t really like the part of her that was short-tempered and impatient, she was trying to grow into an understanding person, while still trying to connect to a more childish part of herself that she lost when her mom passed away. Aang was a great balance between innocence and responsibility, and i think she connected well with that (plus waterbenders love balance). In the end, she wanted hope and peace and meaning, and i think she found those in aang. But im also a big fan of zutara, ennemies to lovers and opposites and yin yang etc, but i feel like Zuko brought out the fight in her, the fire, and she wanted to end the war and stop fighting. Anyway thays all i rest my case lov u

like and they showed that they can write romance with sokka and yue or hell sokka and Suki and it feels real and developed so I'm a little bit disappointed but they didn't put that same energy into katara and aang

The entire relationship is male-centered, from the beginning to end. I rewatched the whole show and just kept being annoyed and angry about the level of emotional inequity there is between them when it comes to comfort. Aang doesn’t offer even a small percentage in comparison reciprocally. Then we get to TLOK and her identity is erased in her own family and legacy. I genuinely don’t even know how people who view media through a feminist lens could like the ship atp, because I get infuriated thinking about how male-centered it is
