First yes, I hate the term wasian, it gives me ick. Second, I’m only partially chronically online so I’ve gotten a trickle of this meetup on my feed. I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with wanting to do a meetup with specifically other wasians - that’s our demographic, that’s what we understand. I think the issue might have been that it was “marketed” as a mixed Asian gathering, but surprise turns out the organizers actually intended it specifically for wasians. I think a mixed Asian meetup would’ve been more fun, but also I don’t necessarily think a wasian specific meetup is white-centering, unless the aim was to celebrate the whiteness only - which I don’t think is what happened? We can’t do anything about the fact that we’re mixed with white lol. Idk does any of this make sense?

This is so wild. Wasian is a term that’s been around for decades. And Wasian is not “centered” on either side…it’s quite literally the combo of White and Asian. Both count equally. There was a Wasian meetup, there should be other meetups, we can have Wasian meetups and other meetups, it’s not that deep. Just some people looking for community.

Wasian is exclusionary. I just hate centering mixed Asianness around whiteness. My black and brown brothers and sisters are still my brothers and sisters. Also the flyer that’s going around has Joseph Gordon-Levitt on it. No hate to the dude, he’s just not Asian.

so far you’re the only one I’ve seen (on my feed at least) to voice BOTH positive and negative feelings towards this. I hate seeing opinions be mutually exclusive 😭 there’s so much more nuance. I was happy seeing people celebrate their mixed heritage but even within the Wasian community I’ve seen blatant colorism pop up. There’s a long way to go when it comes to including ALL mixed and non-white heritages

the funny thing is, none of these wasians seemed to understand- being Asian American in itself makes a lot (if not most) of us feel that way so having an exclusively wasian meetup dismissed the fact that a lot of us experience those feelings. I was too Asian for my classmates but not Asian enough for my family. But like you said it's a weird term and it centers itself on the white part of their heritage & aside from you and like 1 other person, no one has seen the problem with that meetup.

Dylan Adler said that instead of wasian it should be “aight.” My thing to add is people who’s mom is Asian are aight and people whose dad is Asian are wasian 🫪😭

As an Elder Wasian, I never had an issue with the label as it gave me something to be a part of. While I was growing up, I never fit in either category even though I'm more white passing. Now that there's more mixed individuals than there was then, I think events like this are amazing.
