We built our dinning table as well. It also shrunk back. Sooo what we did was stain it and covered with epoxy. No crumbs or anything getting trapped now. And it’s so nice. Not fancy like yours but still nice.

'Common' lumber is lumber suitable for construction, but not fine furniture. Buy 'select' lumber for furniture. It has been kiln dried, has few flaws, and is unlikely to have joints fail (or cause gaps) while in an indoor environment.
