1985, a brand new airline, Dubai, needed help getting off the ground. It came to Pakistan. PIA, Pakistan International Airlines, was one of Asia's most respected carriers back then. Karachi was a gateway between Europe and Asia. Pan Am, BOAC, Lufthansa, Air France, Qantas, KLM, nearly 30 of the world's great airlines landed here. If you were flying between London and the Far East, chances are you stopped in Karachi. Emirates was being born. PIA gave it everything: leased its first planes, trained its crews, and lent its pilot and its know-how. Emirates' first flight ever was from Dubai to Karachi on a PIA jet. Then the business started moving. Pakistan opened its skies and Gulf carriers flooded in. In 2006 they flew 90 flights a week out of Pakistan, by 2015 nearly 400, while Pakistani Airlines flew just 55 the other way. A parliamentary committee found PIA's share of its own country's international traffic collapsed from 50% to just 20%. The passengers Karachi once carried to the world now changed planes in Dubai. Today Emirates flies 3,600 flights a week to 140 destinations and made 5.4 billion in profit last year alone. PIA was left with 33 planes and nearly 3 billion in accumulated losses. Karachi, the older crossroads of Asia, has zero direct flights from Europe, zero from America, zero from East Asia. In 2026 Pakistan sold PIA for 482 million. That's roughly one month of Emirates' profit. The airline that taught Emirates to fly built the future for someone else. #KarachiHistory #PIA #Emirates #Pakistan #Karachi
