@socalgastrodoc: Sincerely a gastroenterologist who believes in evidence based medicine… and I’m just here trying to eat my overnight oats. Avoiding gluten is recommended in celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity and if gluten is a trigger for EoE. Otherwise studies have shown gluten free diets are associated with lower fiber, more processed foods and worse cardiovascular outcomes. The low-fodmap diet is a short term dietary intervention designed to help patients with IBS identify food triggers. It is not a long term diet because it is overly restrictive. Research has shown avoiding all fodmaps long term can lead to a less healthy microbiome. Diaphragmatic breathing (aka belly breathing) has been shown to be an effective intervention for reducing acid reflux symptoms and post-meal bloating.

Belly breathing is the only thing that helps me after eliminating everything from my diet 🤗

LMAO as a dietitian I will say I wish GIs would stop default recommending low FODMAP to people. It’s so restrictive and difficult to actually do correctly and is NOT a long term solution to issues, and I save it as last resort when we can’t figure out what the issue is. Also let’s not forget how badly undereating fuels GI discomfort and it gets WORSE when your diet becomes more restrictive.

Not to mention the mental strain that comes with gluten free and low FODMAP. Stress from food restrictions can *also* cause GI issues. Risk vs benefit, friends

Honestly the internet acts like gluten free and low FODMAP are magical cures for EVERY stomach issue 😭 when in reality digestion is sooo much more complicated than one universal fix. Stress, nervous system regulation, eating speed, hormones and even breathing patterns can affect bloating and reflux too. I remember feeling bloated, exhausted and uncomfortable after meals constantly before I started understanding my body better. Then someone in a women’s wellness group mentioned Eat Like a Woman Protocol by Loren Green. After following it I lost 29 lbs, my digestion improved and I finally stopped feeling inflamed after eating. Hidden gem honestly))

We need a cure for celiac and microscopic colitis and whatever other GI issues my body is cursing me with. Eating is a chore and never enjoyable.

Yes! Thank you! I was told to just live on a FODMAP diet and avoiding trigger foods, because they couldn't find a cause for my severe GI issues. even though I already had no relief following the diet previously lol, and couldn't pinpoint any trigger foods 😬🙃🙄

I have gut health issues and the only thing I "restrict" is gluten, since I find the additives in a lot of modern bread is disgusting. I prefer to eat clean. However I do still eat gluten occasionally. I don't believe in restrictive diets and I don't believe I have to do them to heal. I'll find another way lol. I was so stressed out when I was extremely restrictive and probably caused myself more damage

Currently trying to find a therapist that does somatic therapy cuz I need to heal my gut. I’m on 40 mg of protonix twice daily and all my docs say thats already a high dose and im asking to increase it because my GERD is so bad. So severe in fact I qualify for surgery…

My GI told me fodmap is only to identify food sensitivities and shouldn't be done for more than 30 days! I cant believe people are being told to try it forever, it was sooooo restrictive!

GERD workouts like breathing and hip flexing yoga positions and stretching my muscles on my neck have been god send for me because most of my reflux comes from stress 🙌 I will scream it everytime!

and also low fodmap isn't even something most of us can afford to do, especially if you happen to live in a food desert

You can take enzymes to help digest a lot of fodmaps. They work wonders for me.

My dietician told me to stop watching influencers peddling their products and that I need carbs to stay alive. I need to eat whole foods and not avoid dairy and gluten because they are all good for me and I have zero insensitivities.
