In skincare, petroleum usually refers to petrolatum, mineral oil, or petroleum jelly such as Vaseline. Although these ingredients come from petroleum refining, cosmetic versions are highly purified, medical-grade substances and are very different from crude oil.
Dermatologists often recommend petroleum ingredients because they form a protective barrier on the skin that locks in moisture, reduces water loss, and helps heal dry, cracked, or irritated skin. They are among the least irritating skincare ingredients, rarely cause allergies, and do not clog pores when applied to clean skin. Their safety and effectiveness are well supported by decades of research.
Common concerns are mostly myths. Cosmetic petrolatum is not toxic because harmful impurities are removed during purification and products must meet strict safety regulations. Skin does not “breathe” like lungs, so the occlusive barrier actually supports healing rather than harming skin, and there is no scientific evidence linking petroleum ingredients to skin aging.
Some people still choose to avoid them because they can feel heavy or greasy, may trap sweat or bacteria if applied over unclean skin, or simply feel uncomfortable on very oily or acne-prone faces. Overall, petroleum-based ingredients are considered safe and highly effective moisturisers, and avoiding them is usually a matter of personal preference rather than a health necessity.
