One thing that’s rarely mentioned in this narrative is that Iran was not a democracy. Iran was a constitutional monarchy under the Pahlavi dynasty. A lot of people simplify the story by saying “America removed Mosaddegh and installed the Shah,” but the Shah was already on the throne. What the 1953 coup did was remove Mosaddegh from the position of Prime Minister.
