Hi, it's Juliana! There are three reasons narcissists can say things like this with a straight face. The first is they often focus on intent rather than impact. So in their mind, if they didn't mean to abuse you, then it wasn't abuse. The second is they often think in extremes. You're either all bad or you're all good, there's no in-between. So when you call them out, it feels like you're saying everything about them is bad. And that's why they start pointing out the good things they do or the bad things they don't do. The third is that emotional abuse is much harder to see than physical abuse. A black eye is visible. Broken ribs show up on an X-ray. But with things like gaslighting and chronic criticism, the damage doesn’t show up the same way. So you have to be able or willing to put yourself in the shoes of the person being abused to see it. And that’s something narcissists often struggle to do because they lack empathy. Now, this is actually extremely dangerous because when someone denies the harm they're causing you over and over again, you can start to wonder if what you’re going through even counts as abuse. And before you know it, you get stuck in the relationship, trying to make sense of what's going on, because you're not sure if you even have a valid reason to leave. If you need someone to talk to about all of this, you can always send me a DM or schedule a session with me. My team and I help people heal from narcissistic abuse, and many of us have experienced it ourselves, so we're here if you need us. To your healing, Juliana ❤️‍🩹
