@mrsmusicteacher: We read “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds and then learn a song that goes along with it “Make a Mark“ by Emily Arrow. Then we talk about what it means to be a composer and I tell them they are going to become composers! They have a page with 8 dots and choose whatever color pattern they want. Then I put them in partners and have them play their compositions for each other. This is kindergarten but with first grade I have them create quarter and eighth notes with their dots. I just love seeing their faces when they realize they’ve created music!
