He targeted universities, airlines, and people connected to modern technology, believing industrial society was destroying human freedom. Born in 1942 in Chicago, Kaczynski was considered a genius from a young age. He skipped grades, entered Harvard University at just 16, and later became a mathematics professor at University of California, Berkeley. But after only a few years, he abruptly quit academics and isolated himself in a tiny cabin in rural Montana with no electricity or running water. From that cabin, he began mailing homemade bombs. Over 17 years, his attacks killed 3 people and injured 23 others. The FBI nicknamed the case “UNABOM,” short for “University and Airline Bomber,” which led to the media name “Unabomber.” Kaczynski carefully built bombs from scrap materials and often included fake clues to mislead investigators. His targets included professors, computer store owners, airline executives, and scientists — people he believed represented technological progress. In 1995, he demanded newspapers publish his 35,000-word manifesto called Industrial Society and Its Future. In it, he argued that technology and industrialization were making humans powerless and destroying nature and freedom. The manifesto shocked the public because of how intelligent and detailed it was. The breakthrough came when Kaczynski’s own brother, David Kaczynski, recognized the writing style in the manifesto and alerted authorities. After a lengthy investigation, the FBI arrested Ted Kaczynski in 1996 at his remote cabin near Lincoln. Inside, agents found bomb-making materials, journals, and original drafts of the manifesto. To avoid the death penalty, Kaczynski pleaded guilty in 1998 and was sentenced to life in federal prison without parole. He spent decades incarcerated before dying in prison in 2023 at age 81. The Unabomber case remains one of the longest and most expensive investigations in Federal Bureau of Investigation history — and it’s still studied today because of the combination of terrorism, psychology, isolation, and anti-technology extremism.
