Not a horse breeder, however i have worked with horse all my life, and my opinion (just my grain of salt obviously) on this is i wouldn’t breed a mare who exhibits behaviors i would geld a stud for. Both conformation or attitude. I think a lot of people are so picky with stallions’ behavior but let mares get away with murder and they have as much if not more influence as the stud does

Personally i would breed her again and work work work with her. It is her first time and are they not hardwired to protect their babies? Having her bond with you more i think would make alot of difference for a second foaling. With all that done…if she repeated the behaviour next foaling then assess then. I wouldn’t write her off after just one foaling. Work on the trust!

not a mini breeder, or a breeder at all, but i know that some breeders prefer the minis to be a little spicy because of the attitude for the halter classes, but mystique was also a maiden and was probably confused and protective. i’d say if she’s like it with her second foal and doesn’t calm down after a little bit then it’s probably best not to because it MAY be genetic, but if she does calm down then i’d chalk it up to “omg what is happening!?” momma brain

I wouldn’t write her off after one foaling. My maidens are always pretty weird about their foals. I want them to be protective as long as they’re not mean constantly. Especially if she’s fine now. Give her one or two more and then go from there. I’m sure she’ll be better for the next one.
