@nofret_egypt_: An active Restoration Site The mortuary temple of Amenhotep III, known today as Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III or Kom el-Hettân, was once the largest funerary temple in ancient Thebes. Amenhotep III ruled during the height of Egypt’s prosperity in the 14th century BCE and was renowned for his monumental building projects, diplomacy, and the promotion of royal divinity. The temple originally measured about 700 by 550 meters and was entered through a series of massive pylons, courts, and hypostyle halls leading to the sacred sanctuary. The famous Colossi of Memnon stood at the first pylon, while additional colossal statues once lined the second and third pylons. Unlike many other mortuary temples, the complex was deliberately constructed on the Nile floodplain. During the annual inundation, water entered parts of the temple, symbolizing the primeval waters of creation from which life emerged according to Egyptian belief. Ironically, this symbolic connection to the floodwaters ultimately contributed to the temple’s destruction, together with earthquakes and centuries of stone quarrying. In recent years, major restoration work has dramatically revived the site.
