Because you’re being treated at the same level as the professors. Basically anything over a 90 is publishable in a journal.

I got an 85 for my MSc dissertation. Was proud until I worked at the uni for a while and processed loads of transcripts, one guy had multiple 90s and two 100 on his final transcript. It does happen, but it’s so so rare

above an 85/ 90 means the work should be publishable. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that in the US, two essays that meet the brief but are of drastically different quality are awarded the same mark (100). It’s just different boundaries. 60 is good, 70 is excellent, 80+ is exceptional and might get you a special award, so you can show that off.

because we don't grade on a curve, we don't scale marks up, we have strict marking criteria. US suffers from grade inflation. and people do get above 90

At my old uni I got told nobody will ever get given a grade above 90 because they don’t do that. Like what?

It’s to separate work which is very good from work of exceptional quality - of potentially publishable standard or getting there, producing original thought, engaging on a level with publications in the field. It is rare, but happens occasionally. Generally, students at Bachelor’s/Master’s level don’t have the skills to get there - not because they’re not smart enough, but because it takes time & practice to develop those skills. Every so often you get a student who gets there earlier, and you need to be able to differentiate their work. Over 6 years I have given lots of low-mid firsts (70-75) but probably only 3 or 4 firsts in the 80s.

I got 83 for one of my modules and until this day I don’t know why? Grading is vague and we don’t get enough feedback from lecturers to understand what the difference is

U.K. unis mostly base their marking off Oxford and Cambridge which are very old unis (Oxford is about 800 years old) - they have been international and research unis for many years including some famous inventors and philosophers and Nobel prize winners - so for example if you go to Christ’s College Cambridge you’re at the same college where Issac Newton went to so they’re not going to give you 100% - it’s kind of annoying but that’s just the system - 80% means publishable with minimal corrections - originally all degrees were “arts” so they didn’t really have a concept of things being objectively right or wrong like a maths test - it’s a bit bonkers but it’s basically a medieval system (there are a few videos on here which explain it in more detail) - but yes it is a bit depressing for people who have come from other countries because it feels like your grades are capped at 70% for no reason 🙈

because it literally isnt a score out of 100. British unis score on grade bands, which demonstrate proficiency in the given subject, in both a general sense and in relation to the band itself. a 65 for example shows proficiency a the upper second class level generally, and within the middle tier of that band specifically.

To get above an eighty the work has to be publishable, I’ve only gotten it 2/3 times in any of my degrees.

As a lecturer, I have only ever given 5 90+'s and never a 100 Those 90+'s I could remember off the top of my head and think its incredible with minimal mistakes. For anyone to get 100, it would need to be flawless.

its more common in stem to get higher grades, but less common to pass, due to the more objective nature of the assessments. You’re either right or wrong, whereas for arts and humanities that’s not always as cut and dry.

The US system grades against what you learn from the class, the UK system grades on the totality of information about the topic out there. That being said, somebody in my masters got a 90 on one of her essays (and quite rightfully is also now a researcher and publishing on the topic), so it can be done, you just have to be putting out something essentially revolutionary to the topic.
