I am catholic.. was never taught the bible as literal.. I am still catholic and have no issues with evolution.. ( and no such issues where introduced by my teachers at a catholic school )

I explain 'theory' this way. A theory is something we know to be proven fact but which can't be directly observed; it is proven by evidence. We can't watch an organism evolve in a controlled environment, but we know the egg had to come before the chicken.

Generally people think 'theory' as a 'hypothesis' but don't understand that it's really the other way around atleast in the sciences, hypothesis is a porch chair idea that hasn't been proven yet where as a theory is already proven and well tested and supported.
