@sammicohentalks: Everyone keeps saying taste is the last human moat in an AI world. Unpopular opinion: they're wrong. AI can train on the same data, study the same references, and build the same things… what it can't replicate is the human agency behind deciding what's worth making in the first place. Two pieces shaped this take: Julie Zhuo's Substack essay "When AI Has Better Taste Than You," and a video on tastewashing from @var.aunevik that's worth a watch.
AI is basically a giant digital rolling pin, overtime it will flatten and make all cultures look the same …if everyone becomes dependent on it. There is no creative human element to AI, its just a rolling pin rolling over everything that sticks out

maybe this is coming but I’m not sure AI does taste well now. you can give it all the inputs from Vogue and other taste making people and publications but I haven’t seen it be able to turn that into product designs, content, etc that resonates like a person with taste who can set the tone of what’s cool and coming next. but maybe soon?

Yes they can try but if the ultimate sign of good taste is custom, unique, handmade (hand knit, self sown, artist doing a mural in your home) humans and human design remains front and center.

Not one tech bro has good taste. Someone might say ‘Jony Ive’ but his whole way of seeing is plagiarised.
