Gargantua is a rapidly rotating supermassive black hole from the film Interstellar (2014), with a mass approximately equal to 100 million Suns, located at the center of a distant planetary system and with an event horizon roughly the size of the Earth's orbit around the Sun; it is a Kerr-type black hole, as described by general relativity, causing spacetime around it to be extremely curved, with time running much slower nearby, to the point where hours on nearby objects can correspond to years far away; it is surrounded by a bright accretion disk of gas and dust moving nearly at the speed of light and radiating enormous amounts of energy, but due to gravitational lensing, light bends around the black hole, so the disk is visible from multiple directions at once, forming a distinctive glowing halo around the dark center; The black hole itself spins at near-maximal speed, creating a space-time drag effect that could theoretically keep nearby orbits stable; beyond the event horizon, a region begins from which nothing can escape, and at the center, a singularity of infinite density is hypothesized, where the known laws of physics cease to apply and a new theory of quantum gravity is required. #blackhole #scary #interstellar #montage - @holvek
