I spoil my temps. If they're bad, we thank them for their time and end our contract, no harm no foul. If they are good, I offer them a role in the company when their contract is up. I give them the money I was paying the temp agency, so they get a huge pay bump, and I get a loyal, tested employee without having to take a chance with the interview process. Win-win.

I temped for a 3pl logistics company once. I was the only temp. No one took any breaks. They looked at me like I was crazy. They were so understaffed everyone worked 100 miles an hour because of the deadlines. Not my problem.

I mean regardless of whether someone is a temp employee or permanent employee, you should treat people with respect and give them the basics rights of a break, but also how does someone not realize that a temp employee has very little reason to put up with this bs.

We have occasional temps in our small office (an all-staff meeting, for example, to cover phones), and we always treat them like guests! Treats, a tour of where you can make beverages, etc. They make it possible for ALL staff to participate and be included in these days, so we’re grateful.

as a healthcare admin (lower level lol), people just expect you to do crazy amounts of work for low pay and no recognition lol luckily the doctors I work for are nice but still

It's interesting ... my thought process as you're telling this story is we all need to be temps or independent contractors, so that we have the ability to say this kind of stuff. I'm in a position where I have a really good job and some days I am bullied by management but I'm a single homeowner living paycheck to paycheck and I can't just get up and walk out.

I can totally relate to this. Many years ago, I was working as an ER travel nurse at a large hospital in Texas. At the beginning of my 3rd week, ie 7th shift, I was in break room unpacking my bag when the off going charge nurse told me I was the night charge nurse and 2 nurses and 1 tech had called. Mind you, I had NO experience as a charge nurse period and had not clocked in. When I told her I would not be taking that role, and she replied, you don't have a choice. I calmly looked at her and stated "oh but I do!" and started putting everything back in my bag. She asked what I was doing, in my best southern accent I told her "I'm goin' to tha daymm house, I don't work for ya'll". The house supervisor got there and took the role of charge and I stayed for my contracted role.

As a temp I worked at a very small HR department. If one of us was out, it was hard on the others. I got pregnant with my first child. Within 2 weeks there was a reason I wasn't a good fit anymore. I had been there for 5 months.

I remember times when my hands would literally start to shake while I was typing when I hadn’t eaten all day to get work done. YOUR BODY NEEDS FOOD & A BREAK - you will start to physically be unable to work if you push it too long, and you’ll be more effective and make fewer mistakes if you’re properly fed and rested!

When I worked as a temp right out of college, I was receiving my next job after my summer position ended and heard a conversation between the “agent” finding me jobs and one of the agencies looking for temps. The agency was getting a lecture about workplace safety and hostile environments for the temps they were requesting. Apparently, as explained by the “agent” after, it was the 6th temp agency that company had gone through because the other 5 had permanently banned them as a client. The temps sent there were quitting within a week or two and finally came forward about unpaid and unsigned overtime demands from the company (the company was refusing to sign off on any hours over 15 per week despite several temps recording upwards of 50) and demanding the temps skip any breaks during the work day because “they’re just temps”. The company was banned from using that temp agency, too, at the end of the phone call. I had never felt so confident in my “agent”s ability to advocate for me until then. Even 10+ years later, that lady sticks out in my mind, though the businesses I worked for until my first permanent job don’t.
