Yes. Many people want VERY cheap clothing delivered immediately. But about the same amount of people are ok with paying $100 for a QUALITY sweater. My issue is that they don’t exist anymore. I can pay $7 for a sweater or $100 for a sweater and they are made with same material and likely by the same people. They are the same quality. So I’d say the issue isn’t even that people want cheap and quick, it’s that quality doesn’t exist anymore so why would we pay $100 when we get the same thing for $7?

I always laugh when people say it’s sweatshop. My family has owned a few textile factories. It’s just work, if it’s shitty then the boss or manager is shitty. We touch one aspect of production like the video explains.

This was very interesting and much more nuanced than Shein being a big bad sweatshop company .

so the question isn’t if shein is fast fashion, it’s what isn’t fast fashion atp

Basically, at the end of the day, consumerism, is the problem.... and we're the consumers

SHEIN and temu have caused retail giants that sell cheaper items to lose lots of money. I’ve noticed they’ve had to improve their product quality trying to keep up. Those giants are desperate so of course they’re going to spread misinformation about working conditions and pretend they are better.

I think another thing people forget is Shien and Temu are marketplaces like Amazon/ ebay for eg. Hosting thousands of manufacturers /companies /individual's so to say every seller on Shien is horrible is ridiculous. There would be the best of the best to the worst of the worst companies on there. Shien allowing people to sell internationally taking a 10-20% commission from every sale.

So could one argue that SHEIN is arguably a more sustainable fast-fashion company because they create smaller batches which would mean less waste on products that don’t sell?

Now that you explain it, it makes so much sense. Big factories (with at least a degree of oversight or worker protection) are being replaced with contractors and the gig economy, just like everywhere else.

Thank you for educating us! This is fascinating and such a nuanced take compared to “you should be ashamed for shopping at fast fashion companies”
