“Charge” her $500.00 a month have her deposit it every month into a separate account she has and can’t touch it. Show you deposits monthly and when she moves out she’ll have a down payment.

I dont really think its about the money. the parents are seeing "its only $300, its a good deal"; shes seeing "my parents, people who i count on to support me as unconditionally as you can ever expect a person to in life, aren't showing support in a way that I see is typical for parents. it feels like they're punishing me for my success instead of being proud of how much I've accomplished at my age." _ this is not a money question. this is "how do I maintain a good relationship with my daughter while encouraging her to be independent". there is WAY MORE to independence than money. scaling expectations of household labour and family support would probably teach that better than charging rent. _ its not about the amount at all.

We did tell her that she could live here as long as she is in school, we just didnt expected her to actually go to school! If the intent was to show that life has a cost he could charge the $300 and save the money for her to get only once she wants to buy a house.

I had to pay 25% of my paycheck for rent to my parents all the way through high school (started working at 14). Flash forward to buying first house @ 28 and they gave me the rent back to use to furnish the new house

If your mortgage is fully paid off she doesn't need to contribute to that but you can give her a list of the food, cable, WiFi & utilities & any other items she consumes that cost you money & split those costs equally between your wife, yourself & her

300 a month for rent when you have no other bills outside of probably a phone is not bad. Why not at the very least prepare your kid for what it’s gonna be like when she’s on her own. You might think you’re setting them up for success not making them pay, but when the first sign of hardship comes on her own, you will be the first person she calls to bail her out. You can’t navigate hardship when you have no experience with it.

she should be sharing to cover her own costs like electricity, and food. budget what she needs to pay off her debts and find out if she's saving for a house,car? what is her goal? $300. isn't much to live at home. if she moved out it could cost her$1500- $2000

My aunt/uncle collected rent from their adult working kids, not much really. They saved up the cash and handed over when they left home. It was a way for them to set them off so they wouldn’t come back home.

I don't charge my son rent but I make sure he's paying into a pension and has a stocks and shares isa. I've drummed into him that if he continues on investing the compound interest will make him a very good retirement.

I paid my parent rent as soon as I started working at 17. I lived at home until I moved into my flat with my then boyfriend at 19. This was in the 1980s nothing wrong with charging your children rent if they lived outside in the real world they would have to pay. They use all your facilities and have a safe place to be. I now charge my 29yr old son rent, he happy pay because if he was out renting on his own it would be three times the amount. We are helping him by allowing him to stay with us while he works his way through an apprenticeship. He’s still there for us and we are there for him.

I would tell her or sit with her and show her exactly how much it would cost to live on her own or with a roommate. Go through every single cost and add it all up and then compare it to the rent she’s paying at home and ask her which is the better deal. If she actually sees the cost difference maybe she wouldn’t see her parents as “stealing” her money and might be more open to paying more or at least not complaining about the rent she pays as much or it might give her a boost to move out

She could move out and rent somewhere that costs probably 3-4 times that much plus increased expenses.... 🤷 If you don't like it leave. You have your education paid for. I asked my parents if I could move back home under bad circumstances to save a down payment for a house. I did not pay rent bought my own food and helped paid utilities. I also did all of their yard work which was a big yard. If they asked me to pay rent I would have
